Musikmesse 09: Alesis AM3 USB Microphone

Alesis AM3

Musikmesse is a annual pro audio, light, and instrument trade show held in Frankfurt, Germany. This year’s show was from April 1-4. I’ll be writing a few articles highlighting some of the great things that were unveiled.

With the rise of podcasting, we saw a rise in USB microphones. There’s not really a lot out there, and there aren’t any handheld models. Which is where Alesis comes in…

The AM3 is a dual-capsule condensor microphone that plugs directly into a USB port on your computer. The frequency range is said to be between 30Hz and 20kHz, which is pretty standard. The microphone’s A/D converter allows for 16-bit 44.1 or 48kHz audio, which is just fine for the kinds of applications this mic will be used in. In my opinion, however, the coolest thing about this mic is it’s onboard gain control: you control the gain from the mic, and not from the computer. So nice!

This product should be available this month from major retailers, so keep an eye out on it. I can’t wait to see a price on this thing.

  • Thank you for the site! Do you have an RSS feed? I can’t seem to find it on your page. Keep up the good writing.

  • Together with the whole thing that appears to be developing inside this particular subject matter, your perspectives happen to be quite stimulating. Having said that, I beg your pardon, but I do not subscribe to your whole suggestion, all be it radical none the less. It seems to everybody that your comments are actually not completely justified and in actuality you are your self not even fully convinced of the point. In any event I did take pleasure in examining it.
