Recording Inside Ableton 7
I was browsing some forums earlier and saw someone ask this question:
I was wondering if it is possible to record vocals using ableton live 7? I dont have any programs that do anything with vocals. I have reason 4 but they dont even know what a vocal software is and the other software is ableton live. I know you can record guitar tracks and other electronic instruments, is there a way you can use a mic to record vocals on ableton live? I have an m-audio fast track pro and an expensive mic which i think is a condenser or somethin. Someone please help me out.
Pretty basic problem with a very easy solution. Before using any interface with any DAW, it needs to be configured. With Live 7 open, go into your Preferences and click on the Audio tab. Make sure you have a driver selected (I’m using Core Audio), and now we’ve got to set the ins and outs of our interface.

Select your interface in the Audio Input Device and Audio Output Device box. In my case, my *new* Mbox2! Once you’ve got it selected, Live will tell you to select the ins and outs you want to use with your interface. First, click the Input Config button.

All my ins are selected. This menu states that I can either record all 4 outputs seperatelty (mono) or I can record 2 stereo tracks (1&2 and 3&4). Get out of the menu and go into your Output Config.

Now I’ve got it set to where I can have 2 seperate outputs or one stereo output. If you’re using monitors (and you probably are), you’ll want to stick with your stereo output.
Now we’re done configuring. Exit out of the menu and go into your Live session. Go to your Audio Track (or hit Cmd+T). Make sure your I/O is showing (Opt+Cmd+I). Choose the input you want to record.

At this point, you’ll want to make sure signal is actually passing thru your interface and into your computer. Put your Audio Track into input mode. In the Monitor Section of your track, choose the “In” button. (As you can tell I have the track in Auto, but throw it into “In.”)

If you see signal, you’re on the right path! Now we just have to actually record something. First, hit the dot right below the Solo (big “S” button) and the track is armed to record. Then just click on a dot in the clip you want to record in. Your channel strip should look like this:

Once you click the dot in the clip you want to record to, Live will start recording whatever’s coming thru your interface! It’s that easy!

Hi,
Is there a specific way in which you should record vocals to go over a track? When i set up the audio track to record their is a delay in the sound so I cant record the vocals to match up with the music. Can you help? Thanks Sophie.
Hi Sophie,
The problem your having sounds an awful lot like a latency issue. I can write a more detailed post in the coming days that will tackle this issue.
Stay tuned!
I can’t seem to hear a clean input when I try to record instead i get the monitor and then master and it sounds like chorus. And when monitor is off the recording doesn’t have audio. I feel so stuck.
