Review: Denon DN-S5000
Okay, so I may be a few years behind on owning DJ equipment (shit is expensive!), but I recently bought a pair of Denon DN-S5000s. From what I’ve been able to gather, these things are around five years old. Nevertheless, I thought I’d write a review of them seeing as I’ve logged some serious hours on them this week.
The Display
The LCD is layed out quite nicely. It displays all relevant information exactly how you’d expect it to. The only weird bug I’ve found (and it may not even be a bug) is the way it displays BPM information. If you burn a disc as a straight-up audio disc, it tends to display BPM pretty well. However, if the disc is burned as an mp3 disc, it won’t display BPM info at all. Kind of a bummer, but really not that big of a deal. It doesn’t display a pseudo-waveform like the CDJ-1000s do, rather it shows you how far into the track it is.
Alpha Track
This is one of the reasons I bought these things. Alpha Track is the technology that allows you to play two tracks from the same CD, which, in essence, will allow you to effectively DJ with the use of only one deck. It works surprisingly well, and you can even cue the second track which makes mixing on one deck totally possible.
Be forewarned, however: there are two sets of stereo RCA outputs on each deck. This mean that to use two independent decks and Alpha Track on both, you’ll need a four stereo channel mixer.
The Platter
So, I’m not a scratch DJ by any stretch of the imagination, so maybe the belt-driven CD player wasn’t the best choice for me?
The platter itself feels great; feels just like a real belt-driven turntable. My only beef is the fact that, to me, it’s almost hyper-sensative making nudging the track in time very difficult. Much more difficult than the S-5000′s Pioneer counterparts. Keep in mind that I’m a realtively new DJ; not a pro by any means, so what may be difficult for me may not be so hard for you.
Effects, Looping, and the Sampler
The “effects” I speak of work alongside the platter. Meaning you can set a delay/brake/echo time for when you stop/start your CD(s). They sound okay. Not much to say about them, really.
Looping works and, from the experience I’ve had, is really precise. I’ve not had a lot of really choppy loops. And while some of this is me, some of it is also the device. I just wish the looping feature was more like the Pioneer CDJs, where you set an in/out point and it does it’s own thing.
The sampler is the one aspect I haven’t really played with, so I’m afraid I’ve not got a lot to say about it!
Conclusion
These are great decks and, if you’re a scratch DJ, I’d recommend you get these over the Pioneer line any day. The platter really feels like a turntable, and anyone use to scratching on vinyl would be right at home with these. However, if you’re primarily interested in club DJing, I’d recommend trying these out before actually purchasing them.
These decks work with the Serator Scratch Live timecode CDs, but I’ve read that a select number of users have had problems using these decks in conjunction with SSL (or Torq, for that matter).
I got these decks for $600 (they retail, new, for $900 a piece), so it was really hard to pass them up. My particular decks came with two missing knobs (the fast search buttons which are essential to making new cue points) which cost me $42 to replace (and that was the cheapest I found them!). The belt on these has been known to fail, so you may end up replacing them at some point. The belts are cheaper than the knobs, though.
For being as old as these are, they’re great decks. I don’t regret buying them because I did get such an amazing deal. However, a part of me still wants to own a pair of CDJs.
