McDSP Retro Recorder

McDSP has made me want to buy an iPhone, as if I already didn’t want one. This is their new iPhone app, the Retro Recorder. A simple and functional audio recorder for your iPhone/iPod Touch.

The technology behind the app is Audio Level eXtension (ALX) that promises to make this app sound far better than handheld recorders that cost twice as much. It’s said to be able to capture up to 32 times what other handheld devices can, even without an external microphone.

You can export recorded files – as seperate audio files or through batch exporting – to your PC or Mac.

If you have an iPhone or second gen iPod Touch or OS 2.2.1, you can run this. It even supports OS 3.0.

Some features:

  • Up to 30 dB (32 x) more signal level with ALX technology
  • Audition ALX processing instantly during playback, the original recording is preserved
  • Export original recordings or ALX enhanced versions in WAV format
  • Wi-Fi download page allows downloading to any Mac or PC with most web browsers
  • Batch rename, delete, and export makes organizing a snap
  • User interface rotates 180 degrees for better iPhone microphone orientation when recording
  • External microphone support
  • Record short ideas or lengthy meetings for hours, even in sleep mode
  • Pause, fast forward, or rewind signals during playback
  • Filter list of recordings by keyword to find your recording fast
  • Recorder page allows quick review of last clip recorded, great for level checks
  • Supports mono signals only, up to 22,050 Hz sample rate
  • Developed and supported by a professional audio company with over ten years experience

The app is a mere $2.99 from the App Store. If I could figure out how to link you to it, I would. But for now, just search for it in iTunes. You can also check out the app’s dedicated website here.
