AES 2009: New Tech from CAD
We got some time to drop by the CAD booth today and, suffice to say, they’re coming out with some pretty cool microphones.
The first one we saw is the E100S, a condenser with “the lowest noise floor in the industry.” The press release says its at -3.7dBA, which is pretty impressive. The mic sounded good, although the exhibit floor at AES is not an ideal place to test any piece of gear.
The condenser was designed from the ground up by CAD and contains a lot of proprietary design elements as well as an 80Hz high-pass filter and a 10dB pad. Phantom power is required to power it, too.
The E100S retails for $799 and should be available now. Here’s the specs:
Frequency Response: <40Hz-18kHz
Sensitivity: -30dBV (28mV) @ 1Pa
Impedance: 150 ohms
Max SPL: 150dB (pad engaged)
Self-Noise: -3.7dBA
High Pass: 80Hz
Attenuator: 10dB
Power Requirements: P48
The next two microphones are the ones that Sanjay and I tested pretty well and were highly impressed with. The mics are actually designed by Astatic and come in two different types: the 1600VP and 1700VP. Both are made for more commercial uses. The most practical application would be something like a church choir where multiple mics would be hung from the ceiling, or even for corporate audio where a podium is in use.
The mic pretty amazing: its a small cap condenser with a remote box that enables you to change the polar pattern of the mic on the fly. Go from cardioid to figure-8 with the turn of a knob. Each mic comes with it’s own remote enabling you to control as many mics as you’d like. Six fit into a single rack space.
Prices and availability aren’t available right now, but our source at CAD says they’re also coming out with a shorter podium version soon.

I’d come to come to terms with you one this subject. Which is not something I typically do! I really like reading a post that will make people think. Also, thanks for allowing me to speak my mind!
I totally concur with the previous comment, the internet is actually with out a question developing in to the key style of communication throughout the world and it is credited to web-sites like this that thoughts are spreading so swiftly.
I do not normally reply to posts but I will on this case.
my God, i believed you had been going to chip in with some decisive insght on the end there, not leave it
with ‘we depart it to you to decide’.
As a site owner I believe the material here is reallygreat. I thank you for your time. You should keep it up forever! Best of luck.
